Moving can be quite stressful. From looking through plenty of rental spaces and apartment complexes, to getting everything situated with your landlord, it’s easy to get a headache before the first steps are even completed. And don’t even get us started on packing! Considering that the average American will move about 12 times in their life, we’ve created a moving guide that will make packing a breeze and one less headache-inducing hassle.
Sort belongings by room
It can be easy to just throw things in boxes, but that will only make your life harder when you are unpacking. The best way to do this is not to leave a room when you are packing it up, and to invest in boxes of varying sizes so everything can fit.
Stay away from garbage bags
Garbage bags may seem like a convenient option, but they can easily rip and make moving harder. Avoid any tears by storing all linens and clothing in cardboard boxes or plastic bins.
Keep everything assembled
Don’t be tempted to break things down when you pack them, instead put them in boxes exactly how they are now. This goes great for silverware in trays, cosmetic containers, shower caddies, and hanging shoe organizers.
The power of a small plastic baggie
There are some items you have to disassemble when you are moving, namely furniture and appliances. When doing so, keep all the bolts, nuts, and washers in a plastic baggie and tape it to the furniture pieces before you put it in the mover’s truck.
Label carefully
Pro tip: never label your boxes on the top because when they are stacked you won’t know what goes where! Put a label on the sides, make sure to include its contents, and you won’t have a problem when everything is being unloaded.
Make an easy grab bag
Apartment living is undoubtedly complicated when you are living out of boxes. To prevent having to go through everything the very day you move, pack an overnight bag. Stash an extra set of clothes, pajamas, towels, a clean set of sheets, and toiletries to tide you over until you unpack everything.
